About the Department:

The primary mission of the University Police Department is to ensure a secure environment for all university personnel, students, and visitors. Adopting community policing principles, the department collaborates with various units and organizations to fulfill the university's mission. It offers a comprehensive law enforcement program to maintain the highest standards of safety and service.

About the Position:

The primary objective of a Police Officer at George Mason University is to exercise general police authority within a designated area to perform law enforcement, crime prevention, security, and related public safety functions while upholding departmental standards in community engagement. This role is essential and requires flexibility to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as well as during emergencies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Enforce laws and investigate criminal activities and traffic incidents;
  • Respond to dispatch calls and assist fellow officers;
  • Prepare for and attend court proceedings to provide testimony;
  • Assist the community with sound decision-making and customer service;
  • Exhibit compassion and empathy while delivering law enforcement services;
  • Demonstrate competency in handling customer service issues with tact;
  • Conduct patrols and engage in crime prevention initiatives;
  • Support victims and witnesses in need of assistance;
  • Identify situations requiring crisis intervention and utilize available resources;
  • Execute Emergency Custody Orders as necessary;
  • Adhere to conduct codes, laws, and departmental policies;
  • Report for duty during emergencies as a designated employee;
  • Promote a professional image and demonstrate commitment;
  • Devote full effort to job responsibilities with public trust;
  • Maintain professional and ethical conduct at all times.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Experience in public service or customer relations;
  • Must obtain and maintain NCIC/VCIN operator certification;
  • Legal authority to carry firearms;
  • Annual firearms proficiency required;
  • Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Officer certification or completion of police academy;
  • Maintain biennial in-service education credits;
  • Valid driver's license required;
  • Residency within 75 miles of the campus is necessary.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Understanding of law enforcement practices;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Strong judgment and decision-making abilities.

Other Attributes:

  • Dependable work ethic and high integrity.

Disqualifiers:

  • No recent DUI/DWI convictions;
  • No illegal drug use in the past two years;
  • No felony convictions or serious misdemeanors;
  • No history of mental illness related to criminal behavior;
  • No domestic violence convictions;
  • No unethical behavior unsuitable for a Police Officer.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in a related field;
  • Experience in an accredited law enforcement agency;
  • Knowledge of public safety and emergency management;
  • Public speaking skills.
