Experienced Individual Life Insurance Underwriter

The role of the Senior Underwriter for Individual Life Insurance involves evaluating and underwriting individual life insurance policies with coverage amounts up to $1,000,000. This position may require the review of applications exceeding this amount by a senior underwriter. The individual will be responsible for assessing life insurance risks and binding the organization to each contract.
Key Responsibilities
1. Evaluate, categorize, and make decisions to approve or reject applications for new insurance, plan modifications, conversions, exchanges, reinstatements, and benefit additions.
2. Assess additional premiums for medical conditions and unique risks such as aviation, occupation, foreign residency, travel, and unusual hobbies.
3. Classify insurance applicants to prevent adverse selection while ensuring fair mortality rates. Note: Applications may be processed in both French and English as necessary.4. Conduct secondary reviews of special cases to ensure accuracy and compliance with underwriting standards when required.
5. Liaise with field representatives and Home Office staff regarding insurance applications and necessary adjustments.
6. Respond to standard inquiries from other departments and field representatives concerning underwriting policies, practices, and procedures related to individual applications.
Qualifications
Essential:
- Proficient understanding of medical terminology and human anatomy; capability to interpret and apply medical knowledge to insurance applications.
Familiarity with federal and state insurance regulations is preferred:
- Knowledge of insurance policies and product offerings
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Sound business judgment and risk assessment skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to make informed, independent decisions
- High attention to detail
Education Requirements
Mandatory:
- Bachelor’s degree (BS or BA). Completion of LOMA and ALU courses.
Preferred:
- 5-7 years of experience in individual life underwriting or a comparable combination of education and experience.
