The Role of the Radiation Oncology RN
The Radiation Oncology RN is a crucial member of the radiation oncology team, responsible for delivering patient care and supportive services aimed at achieving optimal patient outcomes. This role involves:
- Assessing and addressing nursing interventions for patients and families dealing with cancer treatment.
- Providing education, counseling, and support to help patients and families navigate their diagnosis and treatment.
- Collaborating with the radiation oncology team to ensure high-quality patient care.
- Conducting assessments, planning, implementing, and evaluating care throughout the treatment continuum.
- Communicating significant changes in patient status to the radiation oncologist and executing nursing action plans.
- Coordinating patient flow and care within the clinic setting.
- Identifying educational needs of patients and families, and implementing ongoing education tailored to those needs.
- Explaining medical procedures, tests, and treatment plans to patients and their families.
