Job Title: Building Official

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Building Official to join our team at Pierce County, WA. As a Building Official, you will be responsible for ensuring that buildings and structures in our jurisdiction comply with relevant building codes and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee and direct the inspection and evaluation of buildings and other structures to determine compliance with Washington State Building Code and Pierce County Code.
  • Develop policies and procedures in accordance with the Washington State Building Code, Pierce County Code, and state laws to correct situations of non-compliance.
  • Participate in the development and monitoring of the division budget, including the establishment of building permit fees.
  • Represent Pierce County at various stakeholder meetings.
  • Develop training programs for staff members, citizens, and industry groups.
  • Interpret code requirements, prepare, and review code amendments for adoption, and participate at state and national code change forums to promote local concerns.
Requirements:
  • A Bachelor's degree in business, architecture, engineering, or public administration.
  • Seven years of experience in technical review, permit coordination, code enforcement, or construction inspection or administration, including five (5) years of supervisory or management level experience overseeing a department, division, or section.
  • Certification as a Building Official by the International Code Council (ICC) is required within six (6) months of selection as Building Official.
