Job Title: Telecommunications Volunteer

This is an unpaid High School Volunteer Opportunity at the Department of Information Resources.

Job Summary:

The TechQuest: Empowering Future Innovators high school volunteer program provides valuable learning opportunities and exposure to different areas of technology and state government.

Responsibilities:
  • Learn how to install and maintain Capitol Complex Telephone System (CCTS) telephones.
  • Learn how to be a liaison for assigned State agencies for all CCTS voice services, including how to move, add, change (MAC) work orders for creating a phone.
  • Learn how to be a liaison for assigned State agencies for all CCTS voice services, including how to move, add, change (MAC) work orders for disconnecting a phone.
  • Learn how to monitor cable facilities within and between buildings and make recommendations for adjustments as appropriate on the Capitol Complex.
  • Learn how to troubleshoot phones in response to customer reports and disseminate unresolved trouble issues to appropriate staff and vendors.
  • Learn how to update the E911 database when a customer moves from one location to another.
  • Learn how to perform moves, adds, changes, and disconnects of digital, analog and VoIP station equipment.
  • Shadow other programs as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Must be a current high school student between the ages of 16 to 18.
  • Must possess good standing high school academic records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cordial working relationships at all organizational levels, including agency management, direct supervisors, co-workers, internal and external customers.
  • Ability to understand, follow and convey brief oral and/or written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to comply with all agency policy and applicable laws.
  • Ability to comply with all applicable safety rules, regulations, and standards.
  • Proficiency in the use of a computer and applicable software necessary to perform work assignments e.g., word processing, spreadsheets (Microsoft Office preferred).
Working Conditions:
  • Frequent use of computers, copiers, printers, and telephones.
  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, listening, and talking.
  • Frequent work under stress, as a team member, and in direct contact with others.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, lifting, and climbing.
  • Occasional passenger in DIR's vehicles to visit other DIR offices or customer locations.
