Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc. operates the Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project, a non-profit legal organization dedicated to providing community education and legal advocacy for immigrant populations, including adults, families, unaccompanied minors, and individuals facing mental health challenges, particularly in matters of crimmigration.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a full-time Immigration Legal Counsel to primarily engage in our Representation Program, offering assistance to both detained and non-detained immigrants navigating removal proceedings.
The Immigration Legal Counsel will have the opportunity to manage a diverse caseload under the guidance of a Managing Attorney. Responsibilities will include applying for various forms of relief such as Asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, Cancellation of Removal, and contesting deportation using innovative legal strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide legal representation to clients in immigration matters.
- Conduct thorough legal research and prepare necessary documentation.
- Collaborate with team members to develop case strategies.
- Engage in community outreach and education initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate degree.
- Active bar admission or pending bar results (California state bar preferred).
- Experience in legal settings, particularly in immigration or public interest law.
- Strong skills in organization, case management, legal research, and writing.
- Ability to work independently and under pressure.
- Team-oriented mindset with a collaborative approach.
- Commitment to social justice for immigrants and marginalized communities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficiency in a second language, such as Spanish, French, Mandarin, Portuguese, or a Mayan dialect.
- Experience working with vulnerable populations, including children and individuals with mental health issues.
- Background in community outreach and public speaking.
