Job Summary: Actalent is seeking a highly skilled Geotechnical Tunneling Engineer to join our team in the DC Metro Area. As a Geotechnical Tunneling Engineer, you will be responsible for performing engineering and analysis for the design of tunnels and shafts in soft ground, mixed conditions, and rock.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform engineering and analysis for the design of tunnels and shafts in soft ground, mixed conditions, and rock.
- Use various tunnel construction methods such as drill and blast, sequential excavation method (SEM), or TBM.
- Perform 3-D soil-structure interaction analysis, geotechnical analysis, and dynamic analysis using advanced finite element software.
- Prepare detailed calculations, design drawings, and specifications.
- Coordinate with Technical Leads, Project Directors, Project Managers, design team, BIM/CADD team, and more.
- Apply rock and soil mechanics skills to evaluate various failure modes and develop ground support schemes.
- Prepare project documentation such as Technical Memos, Geotechnical Data, Interpretive, or Baseline Reports, or Basis of Design reports.
- Characterize and classify ground conditions for different tunneling methods based on geotechnical information.
- Communicate design work through the preparation of drawing sketches indicating support types, geometry, construction sequencing, and instrumentation.
- Use tunnel analysis and design software such as PLAXIS 2D and 3D, FLAC/FLAC3D, and other foundation design software.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering.
- 3+ years of experience in Geotechnical Analysis and Design.
- 3+ years of experience with a mix of underground structure projects.
- Knowledge of soil and rock mechanics.
- Experience with Tunneling.
Additional Requirements for Sr. Geotechnical Engineer:
- Tunnel Design experience.
- Experience with various tunneling methods such as drill and blast, Sequential Excavation Method (SEM), and Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM).
- Proficiency with tunnel analysis and design software (PLAXIS 2D and 3D, FLAC/FLAC3D, and other foundation design software).
