Job Summary

The VETERANS HEALTH ADMINISTRATION is seeking a highly skilled Registered Respiratory Therapist to join our team. As a Registered Respiratory Therapist, you will be responsible for providing high-quality respiratory care to our patients, working closely with our healthcare team to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect, review, and evaluate clinical data from medical records, care teams, patients, and patient families to ensure appropriate care.
  • Perform basic and complex therapeutic procedures for adults and geriatric patients, including monitoring patients receiving mechanical ventilation, assisting with bronchoscopy, and using techniques such as interpretation of clinical data, arterial blood gas values, and acid-base balance.
  • Apply clinical expertise to upgrade patient care where indicated and assist providers in formulating an appropriate respiratory care plan based on patient assessment, history, lung auscultation, chest x-ray, pulse oximetry, etc.
  • Communicate changes in the respiratory care plan and/or patient status to other healthcare team members as appropriate.
  • Make recommendations to providers regarding changes in treatment based on patient observation and diagnostic test values.
  • Provide effective and relevant education to patients, families, students, and facility staff when appropriate.
  • Perform both fundamental and advanced diagnostic procedures.
  • Perform both emergency and acute Respiratory Care procedures in accordance with departmental guidelines and industry standards.
  • Actively participate in departmental quality assurance and hospital organizational performance improvement.
  • Maintain clinical and professional competency based on established standards of practice.
  • Assemble, check, and correct malfunctions and perform quality controls on respiratory care equipment.
  • Participate in in-service education pertaining to respiratory therapy, maintaining a close relationship with other disciplines and students who may rotate through the healthcare facility.
Requirements
  • Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.
  • Education: Individuals must have successfully completed a respiratory care program accredited by the CoARC or its successor.
  • Licensure: Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a full, current, and unrestricted license from a state to practice as an RRT.
  • Credential: Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a valid, current, and unrestricted credential of RRT.
  • English Language Proficiency: Applicants must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Grade Determinations
  • In addition to the basic requirements above, applicants must meet the grade requirements below.
  • Education and Licensure: Incumbent must hold an active license and RRT credential Assignment.
  • This is the entry-level developmental position.
  • RTs at this grade level perform basic therapeutic modalities in all areas of respiratory care environment under close clinical supervision by an RRT at the full performance level or higher.
  • RTs are responsible for such assignments as medication delivery related to respiratory care, initiating and monitoring oxygen therapy, assisting with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, suctioning of artificial airway, evaluating and performing aerosol humidification therapy, and participating in care team rounds.
