Position Overview
As a High School English Language Arts (ELA) Instructor at Uncommon Schools, you will be dedicated to fostering a love for literature and creating a dynamic classroom environment that prepares students for higher education. You will become proficient in your subject matter and possess the ability to motivate and engage high school learners. Central to your teaching will be an emphasis on reading and student-led discussions. Your goal will be to ensure that students leave high school ready for the challenges of college coursework and develop a lifelong appreciation for reading.
Key Responsibilities
1. Instructional Duties
- Deliver a comprehensive literature curriculum that emphasizes inclusive texts and diversity, preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP), SAT, and college-level studies.
- Guide students through an in-depth analysis of literary works by authors such as James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, and William Shakespeare, fostering a passion for literature and critical thinking.
- Enhance students' independent and collaborative reading, writing, and discussion abilities.
- Facilitate discussions led by students, teaching them to substantiate their claims with evidence and critically evaluate arguments.
- Regularly assess student comprehension and writing, adapting lessons to optimize learning outcomes.
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop content and instructional strategies that promote student success.
2. Data-Driven Instruction
- Engage in weekly meetings with leadership to analyze student performance and adapt teaching strategies accordingly.
- Implement differentiated instruction techniques to meet the diverse needs of all learners.
3. Cultivating School Culture
- Establish positive relationships with students to ensure they feel valued and understood.
- Work with families to provide necessary resources that support student learning.
- Participate in professional development and mentorship opportunities.
- Engage in community-building activities that reflect our core values and promote student achievement.
- Collaborate with grade-level teams to set academic goals and refine instructional practices.

- Required Experience:

- A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required prior to employment. Certification is not mandatory at the time of hiring, but candidates must meet state certification eligibility requirements.

Compensation: The starting salary for this position ranges from $50,000 to $64,700, based on relevant experience, education, and tenure.
