Pediatric General Surgery Advanced Practice Provider

The Duke Hospital Pediatric General Surgery Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA) provides direct patient care services for critically ill complex patients (aged 0-21 years) in a variety of care settings, including the ER, PACU, pediatric wards, ICN, PCICU, PICU, OR, and clinic setting, in collaboration with and under the supervision of the pediatric general surgeons.
Responsibilities- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to assist physicians in diagnosing medical and surgical problems and prescribing necessary treatment and services for quality patient care.
- Take patient histories, conduct physical examinations, and record the data in the patient's record.
- Order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures, explaining the necessity, preparation, nature, and anticipated effects to the patient.
- Carry out therapeutic procedures such as wound vac changes, performing biopsies, surgical drain care and removal, central line care, and g-tube care.
- Monitor progress of patients, report progress to supervising physicians, and maintain records of each patient's progress.
- Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
- Current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina for NPs, and licensure in the state of NC and certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants for PAs.
- 1+ years of APP experience in pediatrics strongly preferred.
