Job Summary:

The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas is seeking a motivated and caring individual to serve as a Junior Summer Camp Counselor. This role is responsible for assisting the Summer Camp Counselor with the supervision, health, and safety of an assigned group of children between the ages of 5-12 years.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist the Summer Camp Counselor with the supervision, behavior management, and safety of an assigned group of children.
• Assist the Summer Camp Counselor in keeping daily attendance records of assigned group.
• Supervise the children within sight and sound during an assigned shift.
• Assist in the implementation of the daily group schedule under the direction of the Summer Camp Counselor and Summer Camp Director.
• Assist in the preparation and clean-up of needed supplies and materials for daily activities.
• Actively participate in group organized games and activities, including but not limited to, swimming, team-building activities, and arts and crafts.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Follow Virginia Standards for Licensed Child Day Centers and department Association Standards.
• Wear staff uniform and name tag, or professional attire when appropriate.
• Act as a leader in emergency situations. Report any accidents or incidents according to Emergency Communication Action Plan.
• Ensure all members, guests, and program participants are in a safe environment and actively follow branch Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).

Requirements:

• Minimum of 16 years of age.
• Experience working with children in a supervised setting preferred.
• Proof of a negative TB test within the last two years.
• Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 prior to first day of working camp.
• Complete and maintain required trainings to include but not limited to: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment upon hire and annually thereafter.
• Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check, sex offender registry, and Child Protective Services check.
