Responsibilities
  • Performs urologic surgical tasks.
  • Helps with routing medical materiel management activities.
  • Accomplishes routine safety checks and operator preventive maintenance on fixed and moveable medical equipment and fixtures.
  • Performs routine and specialized housekeeping activities, such as pre and post procedure cleaning, instrument decontamination and sharps care.
  • Able to perform uroflow and post-void residual testing in conjunction with physician.
  • Performs catheterization and irrigation of bladders of patients using aseptic techniques following a separate set of instructions for each treatment.
  • Inserts and drains indwelling catheters, establishing tidal drainage by inserting catheter, connecting tubing and securing tubing at the proper level.
  • Irrigates suprapubic catheters.
  • Operates the Urodynamic Monitoring equipment.
  • Prepares and administers prescribed medications by intramuscular injection, such as antibiotics, hormones and anti-antrogens under the supervision of the physician and clinic RN.
  • Records on patients record medication, route, dose and any problems.
  • Performs and administers intravesical chemotherapy.
  • Performs recovery room or basic post procedure duties, assists surgeon and nursing staff with monitoring and recording vital signs.
  • Administers oxygen, helps arouse patient, and carries out surgeons' post-operative orders.
  • Assists with identifying and managing of postoperative complications.
  • Performs general clinic functions.
  • Prepares patients, instruments, supplies, and equipment for specialized procedures in the OR and specialty clinics.
  • Assists specialty surgeon during urologic surgical and diagnostic procedures.
  • Assembles, operates, and maintains diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.
  • Orders diagnostic laboratory and radiographic procedures as directed.
  • Performs administrative activities unique to specific urologic surgical clinics.
  • Operates computer systems for scheduling patient appointments, obtaining radiological and laboratory results or other items associated with patient care.
  • Provides patient/parent education as requested.
  • Performs or assists with the performance of specialized testing and examinations.
  • Processes, stores, and distributes sterile supplies.
  • Travel to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio (JBSA) for training, as needed.
Qualifications
  • Must have one female and one male filling the 2 Surgical Technologist positions within Urology clinic.
Education and Certifications
  • Graduate from Surgical Technology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or completion of a formal training program provided by any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, and Air Force) for surgical technicians, surgical technologists or operating room technicians.
  • Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support: None. BLS is preferred via the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
Experience
  • Have at least 12 months of experience within in the last 36 months as a urology technician.
  • Must have knowledge of anatomy and physiology to include the location, appearance, and function of various major systems, especially the urinary, digestive, and respiratory systems in order to interpret examination requests accurately.
  • Must have knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices, and techniques, including concepts of accumulated dosage and genetic changes.
  • Must have knowledge of the effects of radiation on living organisms, and the effects of x-ray technique on patient and operator exposure inorder to assure that adequate safeguards are maintained.
