Description

This position is intended for current sworn officers seeking to transfer to the City of Winston-Salem Police Department or former employees interested in rejoining.

The Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD) continually seeks qualified police officers. The Department also fills non-sworn roles as necessary.

Applicants must complete several steps before being invited to join the Winston-Salem Police Department team.

Examples of Duties

Engages in responsible protective service activities aimed at preventing, detecting, and investigating legal violations.

Essential Functions

During assigned shifts, patrols designated areas to monitor for violations of criminal and traffic laws, suspicious behaviors, and disturbances; responds to radio dispatches; addresses calls and complaints; serves warrants and makes arrests; provides police escorts; directs traffic; enforces traffic regulations; investigates traffic incidents; assists injured individuals; reports hazardous conditions in public spaces; conducts criminal investigations by collecting evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, and interrogating suspects; prepares comprehensive reports; testifies in court, and performs related duties as necessary.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience

High school graduation or GED equivalency is required.

Special Requirements

Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Must be at least 21 years old.

Must possess good moral character, with no felony convictions, serious misdemeanors, or DWI's within the last five (5) years.

Must maintain good physical condition.
Must reside within a specified distance from City Hall.

Must hold or be eligible to obtain a valid North Carolina driver's license.

Supplemental Information

Work Schedule: Rotating/Shift Hours

A probationary period of 12 months will be observed, during which performance evaluations will occur at the 6-month mark and at the conclusion of the probationary period.
