Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join our team at the Virginia Department of Corrections. As an LPN, you will provide evidence-based nursing care to patients in a correctional setting, utilizing the nursing process, principles, practices, and techniques of general nursing care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide nursing care to patients in a correctional setting, including administering medications, providing first aid, and maintaining open lines of communication with security and treatment staff.
  • Screen patients for sick call and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals.
  • Record all pertinent information into the medical record.
  • Interact with other departments as needed to promote continued competence through education and certification.
  • Work hours, days, and locations as assigned, and be capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Valid unrestricted Virginia Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license.
  • Working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of practical or general nursing care.
  • Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers' orders in applying treatments.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to administer practical nursing care.
  • Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a corrections or law enforcement environment.
  • Experience or related training in delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care.
