School Health Advocate

We are seeking a skilled School Health Advocate to join our team at Irving Independent School District. In this role, you will play a crucial part in promoting the health, well-being, and academic achievement of all students.
Key Responsibilities- Collect and maintain accurate student health records, adhering to relevant regulations and documentation guidelines.
- Manage clinical functions, including medical care, nursing systems, communication, and supply management, ensuring the clinic remains attractive and organized.
- Provide individual and group health instruction, utilizing educational materials and resources for health-related concerns.
- Train, orient, supervise, and coordinate the duties of assistive personnel, including clinic assistants, substitutes, student nurses, and volunteers.
- Maintain confidentiality for all students and staff members receiving care in the school clinic.
- Maintain professional communication with faculty, staff, students, parents, and community members.
- Promote effective nursing practices with professional collegiality and collaboration.
- Model health values and positive attitudes for students, staff, and parents.
- Develop and coordinate health promotion activities within the district and community.
- Promote safety by assessing the school environment and instructional practices.
- Oversee training of Bloodborne Pathogen Control Plan for faculty and staff.
- Recruit and prepare administrative staff to coordinate responsibilities in disaster readiness planning.
- Foster clinic operations that align with the district's vision, mission, and goals.
- Promote wellness and offer health counseling/services to faculty, staff, students, and parents.
- Participate actively in department and campus staff development, faculty meetings, and special events.
- Assess and develop student-specific individual health plans, implement care, and evaluate results to ensure programs meet student health needs.
- Complete state-mandated screening programs, including vision, hearing, scoliosis, Acanthosis nigricans (AN), dental, and BMI screenings, with referrals and follow-up as needed.
- Implement care for chronic and acute illnesses and manage first aid procedures for injuries.
- Maintain FERPA & HIPAA regulations when communicating student health needs on a need-to-know basis with appropriate faculty.
- Follow up on students with excessive absenteeism to determine medical status for medical intervention and advocate for services when necessary.
- Direct clinic management to protect student classroom learning experiences.
- Promote and maintain high compliance rates for immunizations per Texas Law.
- Assist campus administrators in developing strategies to mitigate exclusion of students for immunization non-compliance.
- Enforce communicable disease guidelines stated by the Texas Department of Health and Board policy.
- Provide appropriate referrals for students needing medical evaluation to ensure timely referrals, care, and return to classroom learning.
- Keep parents informed of student injuries, illnesses, and included in the development of the plan of care while attending school.
- Oversee and supervise programs to safely dispense medications and provide physician-directed medical procedures for chronically and acutely ill students.
- Participate in professional organizations, such as the Texas School Nurse Association (TSNO) and Region X, National Association of School Nurses (NASN), Texas School Health Association (TSHA), and American School Health Association (ASHA).
- Subscribe to professional periodicals and introduce best practices to professional school nursing.
- Maintain required CEUs for nursing licensure.
- Attend and actively participate in professional nursing conferences.
- Adhere to the Professional Nursing Code of Ethics, Board of Nursing rules, and district policies.
The estimated salary for this position is $65,000 - $85,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications. We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
