GENERAL OVERVIEW
Academic Support Assistants are recruited to fulfill various roles throughout the university and within different campus departments. These roles are designed to aid students in financially supporting their education while acquiring essential work skills and contributing to the university's and department's objectives. An Academic Support Assistant is tasked with aiding the designated team or department in a range of responsibilities, project-related activities, and research endeavors, ideally aligned with their field of study.

REPORTING STRUCTURE
The Academic Support Assistant will report directly to the Department or Project Manager overseeing the assignment. The individual in this role will collaborate closely with the manager to accomplish assigned projects and receive guidance, mentorship, and supervision.

POTENTIAL ASSIGNMENTS
Specific roles for Academic Support Assistants may include, but are not limited to:

  • Library - assistance and coverage
  • Academic - support in Wet, Dry, and Modalities Labs
  • Student Engagement - Tutors, Student Ambassadors, and Campus Tours
  • Student Services - Tutoring
  • Facilities - Room Monitoring and Front Desk support
  • Working Scholars Projects - as needed, subject to program guidelines

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The key responsibilities will vary based on the specific assignment.

QUALIFICATIONS AND ELIGIBILITY
Academic Support Assistants must adhere to the following criteria to be eligible for employment. Students who frequently decline or do not volunteer for assignments may be removed from the program:

  • Availability to work a flexible schedule, including Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays; must be able to work at least two weekends per month.
  • May be required to assist with special events based on availability.
  • Willingness to work at any assigned location.
  • All applicants must meet the following criteria:

Academic Requirements:
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required.
- Must be in good academic standing with the institution.
- Must have progressed beyond the first term (2nd - 6th term).

The Academic Support Assistant should anticipate committing approximately 10 hours per week to this role. With prior authorization from the Program Director, students may work up to 15 hours per week, contingent on factors such as GPA and academic standing.

POSITIONAL RELATIONSHIP
REPORTS TO: Department or Project Manager

SKILLS REQUIRED
To perform this role effectively, an individual must satisfactorily execute each essential duty. The following skills are representative of the knowledge, abilities, and competencies required:

  • Proficient understanding of spelling, grammar, and punctuation, along with sentence and paragraph structure.
  • Effective communication skills with a diverse staff and faculty.
  • Ability to follow routine oral and written instructions.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Basic computer literacy, including accurate typing skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision after receiving clear instructions.
  • Organized and capable of problem-solving; able to respond to general inquiries and routine requests for information.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate-level degree program and have progressed beyond the first term; students in their 2nd to 6th term may work a maximum of 10 hours per week based on availability. With prior authorization from the Program Director, students may work up to 15 hours per week, depending on GPA and academic standing.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This role is primarily performed in a standard office environment, which may involve exposure to moderate noise levels. The position requires the operation of personal computer equipment for six to eight hours daily and includes physical demands typical of a traditional office setting, such as walking, standing, and effective communication.
