Join Our Team as a Principal AI Research Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal AI Research Engineer to join our team at The MITRE Corporation. As a key member of our Artificial Intelligence & Autonomy Innovation Center, you will play a critical role in developing and deploying AI capabilities that address complex national and global challenges.

About the Role

The successful candidate will have a strong background in deep learning, high-performance computing, and advanced topics in Large Language Model (LLM) deployment. You will be responsible for researching, developing, evaluating, and integrating AI capabilities, with a particular focus on security and trust, especially for generative AI.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct research, development, engineering, evaluation, and integration of AI, including LLMs, to help address critical national and global challenges in domains including health, transportation, law, climate change, national security, and defense.
  • Provide technical and organizational leadership to large interdisciplinary teams and complex projects with significant resource requirements and technical risks.
  • Analyze AI use cases and recommend secure and trustworthy solutions to sponsors.
  • Build, scope, and staff technical projects with government sponsors and people leaders.
  • Collaborate across government, industry, and academia to provide, assess, and shape trustworthy and secure AI-enabled systems.
Requirements
  • Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 8 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 5 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience leading large cross-functional teams and complex projects, leading others to execute on technical challenges.
  • Hands-on experience with machine learning and one or more of the following technical areas: Generative AI, AI Security, Trustworthy AI, AI Governance, or AI T&E.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to articulate complex technical concepts to both lay and expert audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in computer science, engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated advanced skills with Python and the standard ML stack (Tensorflow/Torch, NumPy, Pandas, etc.).
  • 10+ years of impactful work experience in AI-related fields.
  • Experience leading highly visible projects or teams to resolve complex problems with lasting impact on the larger mission.
  • Experience publishing consequential AI research in journals or conferences.
  • Track-record of successful deployment of AI/ML systems or components that have been used by customers or stakeholders outside of a lab/experimental setting.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance.
