Position Overview: This role involves overseeing the maintenance and care of the university's grounds, while also supporting construction and upkeep activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and coordinate the efforts of staff engaged in various tasks including grounds equipment operation, landscape development, tree maintenance, pest management, and general site enhancement.
  • Provide expertise in pest control and manage the extermination of pests within university properties.
  • Work under the general guidance of the Director of Physical Plant, with performance evaluated based on task completion and outcomes achieved.

Organizational Relationships:

Reports to: Manager, Landscape Operations

Supervises: Grounds staff, Greenhouse personnel, Irrigation Technicians, Lead Landscape and Pest Control Technician, and Refuse Driver.

Essential Duties:

  • Assist in the planning, design, and execution of seasonal horticultural displays as needed.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and training for grounds employees, ensuring they are equipped with necessary skills and safety protocols.
  • Assign tasks to workers and oversee the quality and efficiency of their output.
  • Maintain accurate records and provide regular updates on operations and projects.
  • Ensure safety of pathways and roadways during adverse weather conditions.
  • Manage inventory and procurement of supplies and materials for operations.
  • Collaborate with the Manager on planning and estimating maintenance, repairs, and construction projects.
  • Inspect grounds, greenhouses, buildings, vehicles, and equipment for compliance and quality assurance.
  • Administer pest control measures in accordance with regulatory guidelines.

Education:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional education in a related field may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis. Training in landscape architecture or related certifications is preferred.

Experience:

A minimum of five years of experience in grounds maintenance and pest control, with supervisory experience preferred. Relevant vocational training may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis. Must obtain SPCS Certified Applicator licensing within one year of employment.

Requirements:

A valid driver's license and a safe driving record are necessary for this position. Regular attendance during scheduled work hours is essential.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive understanding of supervisory techniques and safety regulations in maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of horticulture, landscape design, and pest control practices.
  • Ability to effectively plan and coordinate the work of multiple teams.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to maintain effective relationships with staff and stakeholders.
  • Capability to respond promptly to emergency situations.
  • Proficiency in using office equipment and software.

Physical Demands:

The role may require lifting and moving items up to 50 pounds and working in various environmental conditions.
