The Chief Investment Office (CIO) team at AIG oversees all investments managed by external managers on behalf of the insurance company. This team assesses the performance of external managers, evaluates tactical asset decisions, provides recommendations on investment guidelines, and establishes the strategic asset allocation for AIG. Currently, the CIO Team is in search of several Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) across various asset classes, which may include corporate investment-grade and high-yield bonds, emerging markets, structured finance, agency and non-agency residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS), commercial mortgage loans, corporate and structured credit, sovereign debt, and other relevant sectors.
  • In these newly established positions, the CIO Team will facilitate market monitoring and surveillance of invested assets for each primary asset class managed by external managers on behalf of AIG, while also assisting the AIG CIO with specific projects.
  • The primary duties of the SME will include: (a) overseeing all investment activities within their designated asset classes, (b) advising the CIO team on current and future allocation levels in response to changing market conditions and risk appetite, (c) coordinating with external managers on risk management and necessary reporting, and (d) collaborating with AIG CIOs and third-party investment managers to assess emerging credit or risk issues across the portfolio.
Additional responsibilities for the SME will encompass:
  • Providing guidance, alongside other CIO team members, on external manager selection, market opportunities, relative value assessments, and issuance/redemption activities within the asset class, including advising on the annual investment strategy and strategic asset allocation.
  • Serving as the primary liaison with all external managers in the asset class, focusing on relationship management and enhancing operational effectiveness.
  • Establishing regular reporting schedules, meeting frequencies, and other processes with external managers in the asset class, summarizing reports as necessary for AIG Regional and Global CIOs.
  • Setting and maintaining performance benchmarks for all external managers in the asset class as required.
  • Creating materials as needed and presenting them to various AIG governing committees, including local and global Investment Committees and senior management.
  • Assisting in the selection of managers and establishing formal oversight processes for manager performance.
  • Developing and maintaining AIG Asset Class Frameworks.
  • Utilizing AIG platforms (including Aladdin where applicable) to aggregate data and conduct internal analyses as required.
  • Participating in investment manager meetings and industry conferences as appropriate.
  • On scheduled reporting dates, coordinating with external managers to deliver agreed-upon reports with data to be utilized by CIOs, Enterprise Risk Management, Investment Accounting, and other AIG departments as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Over 10 years of proven experience in investment management or insurance asset management, with a focus on commercial real estate investments.
  • Strong understanding of risk frameworks, along with credit, liquidity, and capital constraints applicable to regulated insurance companies.
  • Exceptional communication skills (both written and verbal) with the capability to introduce innovative ideas into the internal investment process.
  • Experience with Aladdin is preferred, though not mandatory.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks across a variety of activities and meet tight deadlines.
  • Limited travel requirements (up to 10%).
