POSITION SUMMARY:
The Internal Medicine Hospitalist will report directly to the Hospitalist Medical Director. Hospitalists are responsible for managing the clinical needs of acutely ill patients during their hospital stay. The hospitalist will also engage in teaching, research, and leadership within the field of hospital medicine.

Hospitalist physicians will deliver clinical care for patients admitted to Eskenazi Hospital, support surgical and specialty services through consultative general internal medicine practice, and provide education to staff, graduate medical trainees, and medical students during inpatient rotations.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical Duties

Foster a positive work environment through collaboration across departments, aligning with Eskenazi Health and Eskenazi Medical Group initiatives.

Conduct assessments, make diagnostic determinations, manage ongoing clinical care, facilitate necessary referrals, develop care plans, issue therapeutic orders, authorize transfers, and assess risks for patient discharge or transfer, both directly and through supervision of trainees.

Ensure effective communication and coordination with all healthcare personnel involved in the care of hospitalized patients.

Perform bedside rounds on all patients (either independently or with team members) and provide attending notes for all assigned patients.

Review resident notes for accuracy and relevance, ensuring timely completion of all medical records and documentation in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Review and co-sign patient discharge summaries within expected timeframes.
Complete all medical record documentation and billing submissions within one business day of service.

Provide timely and effective cross-coverage for residents to allow their participation in scheduled educational sessions, while modeling effective handoffs to incoming attending physicians.

Engage in direct communication with patients' family members and advocates to ensure clarity regarding patient status and care plans, promoting a patient-centered approach within the hospital environment.

Academic Responsibilities
Set clear expectations for supervised trainees at the start of their rotation.

Evaluate trainees with constructive feedback on their knowledge, skills, attitudes, and overall performance at least once during their rotation.

Conduct supervisory rounds with the medical team, emphasizing clinical reasoning and care planning (diagnostic, therapeutic, and transitional).

Encourage self-directed learning among trainees and share new knowledge with the team.
Deliver topic-related instruction to the ward team at least bi-weekly, preferably based on current literature.
Contribute to evidence-based presentations for noon conferences, ideally in an interactive format.
Participate actively in rounds on a regular basis.
Conduct interviews for prospective resident and faculty candidates.

Serve as a professional role model for trainees in interactions with peers, patients, families, and other healthcare team members.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
Possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse personalities. Must be approachable, respectful, and capable of presenting data with strong communication and presentation skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
MD/DO with Medical Staff privileges at Eskenazi Health.
Possess an active and updated Medical license to practice in the state of Indiana.
Hold an active DEA number.
Must have completed a residency in Internal Medicine or an equivalent training program and be BE/BC or equivalent.

Maintain patient and family confidentiality.
Ensure protected health information is handled in accordance with HIPAA privacy guidelines and regulations.
