Fellowship in Academic Hospital Medicine
Overview:
The UCSF Division of Hospital Medicine offers a prestigious fellowship aimed at developing future leaders in the field of hospital medicine. This program has a rich history of training distinguished professionals who have made significant contributions to academic institutions across North America.
Program Details:
This one-year UCSF Academic Hospital Medicine Fellowship (AHMF) is tailored for individuals pursuing careers as academic hospitalists without the focus on grant-funded research. The fellowship emphasizes essential skills in leadership, quality enhancement, patient safety, educational curriculum development, and teaching methodologies.
Clinical Experience:
Fellows will engage in approximately one-third of their time in clinical roles, which include both the primary teaching service and the night hospitalist service. These positions are designed to foster teaching skills and provide hands-on experience in a supportive environment.
Research and Projects:
All fellows will enroll in a foundational course on clinical research at UCSF, allowing ample opportunity to work on various projects. Each fellow is expected to complete a project that is suitable for presentation and publication, enhancing their academic portfolio.
Goals of the Fellowship:
The primary objective of the AHMF is to cultivate the next generation of leaders in hospitalist program management, quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical education. This fellowship is particularly suited for recent graduates or early-career hospitalists aiming for roles as clinician-educators or clinician-administrators in academic medical settings.
Training and Development:
Fellows will receive comprehensive training in teaching techniques, curriculum design, quality improvement initiatives, and leadership through a structured program tailored to individual interests. Participation in core and elective activities is encouraged, and fellows will attend monthly Works-in-Progress sessions, weekly division meetings, and regular mentoring sessions.
Application Requirements:
Interested candidates should prepare the following materials for submission:
- An updated curriculum vitae
- A personal statement detailing interests, experiences, and motivations for applying
- One letter of recommendation, preferably from a program director, along with the names and emails of three professional references
- A statement on contributions to diversity, following provided guidelines
