San Francisco, California, United States Crusoe Full time
Job Overview

Crusoe Energy is dedicated to harnessing value from stranded energy resources through innovative computational solutions.

Our mission aligns the long-term interests of environmental sustainability with the future of global computing infrastructure. As data centers face an ever-increasing energy demand, we are committed to ensuring that this energy is sourced responsibly. Crusoe strategically co-locates mobile data centers with stranded energy resources, such as flare gas and underutilized renewable sources, to provide low-cost, carbon-negative distributed computing solutions. Our Crusoe Cloud platform is a managed cloud services offering powered by stranded energy, facilitating climate-friendly advancements in computationally intensive domains like artificial intelligence, graphics rendering, and computational biology.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a Lead Principal Software Engineer to contribute to the design and expansion of our carbon-reducing cloud computing platform. With the impending public launch of Crusoe Cloud, you will play a key role in enhancing our storage infrastructure, virtualizing state-of-the-art computing hardware, and developing superior networking capabilities.

In this capacity, you will be pivotal in shaping the overall architectural strategy of the engineering team, significantly impacting our technological direction and financial success. Your responsibilities will include fostering our engineering culture, establishing scalable practices, and leading the development of Crusoe Cloud.

Your role will also encompass evaluating various tools and frameworks for their relevance to our engineering ecosystem, focusing on reliability, scalability, cost-effectiveness, ease of integration, and implications for talent acquisition. As a mentor, you will engage with engineers at various levels, guiding their individual and team growth. Furthermore, you will collaborate extensively within the engineering department to ensure the successful execution of major projects aligned with the company's objectives.

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with product teams, engineers, and infrastructure to design robust, scalable systems across our global data centers.
  • Develop scalable, fault-tolerant patterns and practices for the engineering team.
  • Lead initiatives across the engineering organization, including tech talks, open-source projects, and book clubs.
  • Design and implement innovative features and projects, from foundational hardware to user-facing APIs.
  • Play a crucial role in shaping the roadmap for cloud products, steering engineering efforts towards groundbreaking advancements.
  • Mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of teamwork and continuous learning.

Qualifications for Success:

  • Over 10 years of professional software development experience.
  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Go, Rust, Java, or C++ for over 10 years.
  • Extensive experience in architecture and design, including reliability and scalability of new and existing systems.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years in a mentorship or leadership role.
  • Strong foundation in data structures and algorithm design.
  • Proven track record in building and maintaining scalable, highly available fault-tolerant distributed systems.
  • Solid understanding of infrastructure design and the operational trade-offs involved.
  • Familiarity with modern CI/CD practices and build systems, such as GitLab CI/CD, CircleCI, or GitHub Actions.
  • Experience with contemporary infrastructure tools, including Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, Cloud Formation, and Terraform.
  • Knowledge of concurrency, multi-threading, and synchronization.
  • Proficient in Unix/Linux environments.
  • Experience with TCP/IP and network programming.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Commitment to embodying the company's values.
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Benefits:

  • Flexible hybrid work schedule.
  • Competitive salary package.
  • Restricted Stock Units in a rapidly growing, well-funded technology firm.
  • Comprehensive health insurance options, including HDHP and PPO, vision, and dental coverage for you and your dependents.

  • Paid life insurance and short-term/long-term disability coverage.
  • Access to Teladoc services.
  • Pet-friendly work environment.
  • 401(k) plan with a 100% match up to 4% of salary.
  • Generous paid time off and holiday schedule.
