Controller Position

Volunteers of America Oregon is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Financial Leader to lead our finance department. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for overseeing all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.

Job Summary

The Financial Leader will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer and will be responsible for ensuring the financial health and stability of the organization. This is a full-time, salaried exempt position that requires a strong leader with excellent financial management skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the finance department and oversee all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Develop and implement financial policies and procedures to maximize efficiency and maintain internal controls.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports for the executive team and board of directors.
  • Coordinate with external auditors for annual audits and ensure timely completion of audit reports.
  • Manage cash flow and forecasting, and develop a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism.
  • Work closely with program directors and managers to ensure program budgets are accurately prepared and monitored.
  • Provide strategic financial input and leadership on decision-making issues affecting the organization.
  • Ensure financial records are maintained in compliance with accepted policies and procedures.
  • Manage the system for the precise and prompt submission and processing of monthly billing, receivables, and reimbursements.
  • Oversee the invoicing and payment tracking for contracts to ensure they meet both contractual obligations and audit requirements.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Masters degree in accounting, business, and/or finance highly desired.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or Certified Management Accountant (CMA / CGMA) and experience with nonprofit operations highly desired.
  • 8-10 years of accounting and finance experience in financial project management, auditing, budgeting, and reporting of financial information.
  • Experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, general ledger, AP, AR, payroll, and investments.
  • Experience translating complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels, including finance and non-finance managers.
  • Experience and knowledge of accounting and reporting software.
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting standards and practices, and experience working with all levels of governmental agencies preferred.
