Position Overview:
The Department of Psychology at the University of Miami is inviting applications for a postdoctoral associate role within the lab led by Dr. Mingbo Cai. This position is primarily focused on a collaborative project aimed at decoding spontaneous thoughts. Candidates with a robust background and interest in various research directions of the lab are also encouraged to apply. The project emphasizes understanding the content and dynamics of spontaneous thoughts through fMRI decoding and naturalistic tasks, as well as exploring abnormalities in mental disorders. The successful candidate will analyze existing fMRI datasets from both healthy and clinical participants experiencing spontaneous thoughts, in addition to conducting new experimental studies.

Qualifications:
Expertise in at least one of the following areas is highly desirable:

- Deep learning models in natural language processing or computer vision
- Advanced fMRI analysis using encoding or decoding models
- Computational modeling related to spontaneous thoughts or psychiatric disorders
- Experimental design utilizing naturalistic stimuli.

The initial contract duration is one year, with the potential for extension based on performance and funding availability.

The Department of Psychology is expanding its focus on cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, aiming to recruit new faculty with strong computational expertise and foster collaborative opportunities.

The neuroimaging facility is equipped with a state-of-the-art Siemens 3T Vida MRI scanner.

Core Responsibilities:
- Analyze neural imaging data related to spontaneous thoughts.
- Design and conduct brain-imaging experiments with both healthy and clinical populations.
- Prepare research reports and technical papers for publication.
- Maintain an in-depth understanding of state-of-the-art principles and theories relevant to the research project.
- Assist the principal investigator in grant proposal preparation and occasionally mentor graduate students.

This list of duties is not exhaustive and may be expanded to include additional responsibilities as necessary.


Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. (or M.D.) in neuroscience, psychology, psychiatry, computer science, machine learning, electrical engineering, or related fields.

Preferred Experience:
- Prior experience in conducting fMRI experiments and/or analyzing data using computational models is highly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficiency in collecting, organizing, and analyzing human behavioral and/or brain imaging data.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Good programming skills in Python or a similar language.
- Familiarity with at least one deep learning framework such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Excellent English communication skills (both academic writing and oral communication).
- Willingness to collaborate and support colleagues.
