Position Overview

The PRN Oncology Pharmacy Specialist plays a vital role in the preparation, compounding, dispensing, and distribution of both sterile and non-sterile hazardous medications within the outpatient oncology environment. This includes managing hazardous waste, maintaining documentation, and overseeing inventory control.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the safe preparation and dispensing of intravenous hazardous and non-hazardous medications.
  • Adhere to proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage, complying with regulatory mandates for all hazardous drug handling procedures.
  • Engage in the evaluation and implementation of Closed System Transfer Devices (CSTDs) for the preparation of anticancer medications, ensuring familiarity with regulatory standards.
  • Complete training on the storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous drugs in accordance with employer, state, and national guidelines, with documented competency reassessed annually.
  • Receive training on hazardous drug exposure and spill management, including protocols for treating accidental exposure and proper disposal methods.
  • Assist in the preparation of CADD pumps upon demonstrating competency.
  • Support various aspects of investigational drug management, including inventory oversight, record keeping, and preparation of investigational products for distribution.
  • Minimize medication waste by adhering to policies and procedures, optimizing drug use through effective scheduling.
  • Conduct daily purchasing activities and collaborate with vendors, group purchasing organizations, and manufacturers.
  • Implement inventory control strategies to reduce expired products and ensure adequate medication turnover, particularly for high-cost items.
  • Exercise caution when receiving products, ensuring compliance with shipping and handling requirements for hazardous substances.
  • Contribute to drug shortage management by developing purchasing strategies and exploring alternative product procurement.
  • Utilize information technology resources to enhance the quality and efficiency of operations, including generating reports from clinical and automation systems.
  • Evaluate equipment and storage facility monitoring in line with current standard operating protocols to ensure compliance and reliability.

Qualifications:

  • Must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Demonstrated understanding of proper aseptic techniques as per USP and USP .
  • Experience in compounding and dispensing hazardous medications is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge acquisition may occur through various methods, including on-the-job training, structured learning, and accredited programs.
  • Completion of 3 hours of continuing education, with at least one hour from a live credit source, approved by the Alabama Board of Pharmacy or the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education-Technician.
