Bilingual Recovery Support Specialist

Position Summary:
The Recovery Support Specialist plays a crucial role within The Happier Life Project team. This position is designed for individuals who provide essential support and guidance to those experiencing challenges related to substance use and mental health. As a Recovery Support Specialist, you will utilize your personal journey through recovery to instill hope, encourage resilience, and assist individuals in reaching their personal aspirations. Your empathetic nature and lived experiences will help create a nurturing environment that promotes the development of coping strategies, self-advocacy, and community engagement.
Compensation: $22 - $27 per hour
Key Responsibilities:
1) Support and Mentorship:
- Establish trusting relationships with individuals in recovery, including those reintegrating from incarceration, offering compassion, support, and practical advice.
- Share your recovery experiences to inspire hope and build connections.
- Assist individuals in defining and achieving their recovery objectives while honoring their independence and self-direction.
- Provide emotional support and active listening during challenging times.
2) Personalized Recovery Planning:
- Work collaboratively with individuals to create tailored recovery plans that reflect their strengths, needs, and goals.
- Help identify resources such as treatment programs, support groups, housing, employment, and educational opportunities.
- Guide individuals in developing strategies for sustaining recovery and overcoming obstacles through recovery planning sessions.
3) Education and Skill Development:
- Conduct educational workshops and support groups focused on recovery, wellness, coping strategies, and recovery planning.
- Teach essential life skills, including budgeting, time management, and effective communication, to help individuals maintain stability and independence.
- Encourage participation in recreational, cultural, and social activities that enhance overall well-being.
4) Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain precise and confidential records of participant interactions, progress, and outcomes using designated documentation systems.
- Prepare reports and case summaries for program evaluation and enhancement.
Reports to: Peer Support Supervisor
Minimum Qualifications:
- Fluency in both spoken and written Spanish and English.
- Personal experience with recovery from substance use and/or mental health challenges is essential.
- At least six months of sobriety and/or abstinence.
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Completion of a Peer Support Specialist training program or relevant certification is preferred, or the ability to achieve certification within four months.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy, active listening, and cultural awareness.
- Ability to set healthy boundaries and maintain professionalism in a peer support context.
- Knowledge of community resources and support services available to individuals in need.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Commitment to ongoing professional growth and self-care practices.
- Ability to uphold professional boundaries and adhere to confidentiality standards.
- Background Check: Arrests/convictions will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
- Drug Test Clearance.
Preferred Additional Qualifications:
- Studies in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related field.
- Prior experience in peer support, counseling, or social services.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles and motivational interviewing techniques.
- Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) or case management software.
- Experience working with Native communities is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications:
Current California Driver's License, reliable transportation, and current automobile insurance.
Physical and Mental Demands:
- Positive Attitude.
- Some desk work required.
- Ability to bend and lift/carry up to 25 lbs.
- Travel to community outreach events and partner locations may be necessary.
Benefits:
- Two weeks of paid vacation annually (prorated for part-time based on hours worked).
