About the Department:
The Center for Peace Technology and Entrepreneurship is dedicated to promoting sustainable peace in areas affected by conflict by encouraging innovation, entrepreneurship, and the strategic application of technology.
About the Position:
As a co-director of the Center for Peace Technology and Entrepreneurship within the Carter School, the Director of Research and Practice is instrumental in furthering the Center's mission and enhancing its status as a premier institution for peace, technology, and entrepreneurship.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee Peace Practice Initiatives: Lead and manage all facets of the Center's peace practice initiatives, ensuring they align with the organization's core mission and values. Develop and execute strategies that foster peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and community involvement. Collaborate with various stakeholders to create and implement programs that promote lasting peace and social harmony. Assess and refine the effectiveness of peace practice interventions to achieve targeted outcomes. Engage in regular fundraising efforts alongside the Carter School Advancement Team, identifying potential donors and crafting compelling cases for support.
- Direct Research Activities: Provide leadership in enhancing the scholarly mission of the Center, focusing on research, publications, and knowledge sharing. Collaborate with faculty, researchers, and practitioners to design and implement scholarly initiatives that align with the Center's goals. Cultivate a culture of academic excellence and innovation, supporting interdisciplinary collaboration and intellectual development. Ensure the quality and impact of scholarly outputs, maintaining rigorous standards.
- Support International Policy Initiatives: Collaborate closely with the Director of Tech, Law, and Policy to support initiatives related to international policy, peacebuilding, and entrepreneurship. Contribute insights to inform policy development and advocacy at both national and international levels. Represent the Center in relevant discussions and networks, fostering strategic partnerships and dialogue on critical issues.
- Manage KPIs and Budget: Develop key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor progress towards organizational objectives. Set budgetary targets and allocate resources effectively to support the Center's priorities. Monitor financial performance, ensuring compliance with budgetary constraints and reporting standards. Regularly evaluate and report on KPIs and financial metrics, identifying trends and opportunities for enhancement.
- Lead Center Team: Provide guidance and direction to the Center's team, promoting a collaborative and inclusive work environment. Recruit, onboard, and develop talent, ensuring team members possess the necessary skills and resources for success. Delegate responsibilities appropriately, fostering accountability and professional growth. Conduct regular performance evaluations, providing constructive feedback and recognizing achievements.
Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should possess a blend of academic credentials, professional experience, and personal qualities that align with the role's responsibilities. A strong foundation in leadership, subject matter expertise, and strategic thinking is essential.
- Leadership Experience: Proven experience in leadership roles within relevant fields such as peace practice and scholarly research on an international scale.
- Subject Matter Expertise: In-depth knowledge of peacebuilding and entrepreneurship, gained through academic qualifications or professional experience.
- Scholarly Achievements: Strong academic credentials, including advanced degrees in fields such as international relations or peace studies.
- Budget Management Skills: Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and achieve financial objectives in previous leadership positions.
- Collaborative Approach: Ability to work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders to achieve common goals, fostering a culture of teamwork.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of engaging diverse stakeholders.
- Strategic Thinking: Proficiency in developing and executing plans to meet organizational goals, with a focus on problem-solving.
- Master's degree in a related field, or equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. is preferred for candidates expected to significantly contribute to scholarly research.
- Extensive experience (typically 10+ years) in international conflict resolution, including managing teams in conflict-affected areas.
- Experience in multi-source fundraising is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with current trends and challenges in the field is advantageous.
