Job Summary:

Steward Health Care is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) to join our team on a per diem basis. As a Medical Laboratory Technician, you will play a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases by performing laboratory tests and analyzing results.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform routine and specialized testing on patient specimens to obtain information used in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
• Work in a team environment to accomplish laboratory goals and objectives.
• Possess knowledge of medical technology and answer inquiries from physicians and other healthcare professionals.
• May be required to mentor new employees and students.
• Obtain and process specimens for laboratory testing according to department/section policy and procedures.
• Verify accuracy of test specimens before testing.
• Perform technical procedures as required by department or supervisor.
• Perform all testing in a timely manner as established by departmental policy and perform all tests with confidence.
• Inspect instruments and verify that equipment is in proper working order before testing.
• Insure that test results correlate with each other and the patient's clinical situation.
• Recheck and report to the supervisor all questionable results.
• Follow critical value procedure.
• Demonstrate proficiency in performing all computer tasks associated with job responsibilities.
• Perform scheduled maintenance to assure proper operation of equipment.
• Record the procedures performed.
• Perform quality control and quality assurance procedures and instrument checks correctly.
• Perform analytical and decision-making functions with minimal supervision.
• Apply step-by-step problem-solving and thinking patterns.
• Act as charge person assigned to provide direction, support, and technical ability to others.

• Complete work assignments within an acceptable time frame.
• Use time and resources to the best possible advantage for successful completion of job responsibilities.
• Develop and maintain efficient working relationships.

Required Knowledge & Skills:

• Be responsible for ongoing development of his/her work skills through the use of available resources (i.e., in-services, formal educational programs, other work groups, and on-the-job training).
• Attend and participate in staff meetings and in-services and/or reviews documentation as required.
• Assist in the orientation of others and actively participate in mentoring.
• Perform analytical and decision-making functions with minimal supervision.
• Recognize and seek assistance/consultation when appropriate.
• Demonstrate an understanding of relative Hospital and all-departmental policies and procedures including safety issues.
• Possess awareness of programs/services provided by Hospital and where they are located.

Education/Experience/Licensure/Technical/Other:

• Required Qualifications: MLT with Associates degree.
• Preferred Qualifications: MT ASCP/NCA with Associates degree 2-5 years experience.
