About the Position:

Overview

The City of Roanoke is in search of a Business Compliance Inspector/Auditor responsible for evaluating and investigating commercial entities to ensure adherence to the municipal licensing tax regulations. Key responsibilities encompass verifying that all individuals, trades, professions, or businesses operating within the City comply with local and state tax statutes; managing the processing and issuance of relevant business licenses according to the activities conducted; and maintaining comprehensive business license records. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in business, accounting, finance, or a related discipline is required, along with three to five years of relevant experience in tax compliance enforcement and exceptional customer service; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bilingual candidates, particularly those fluent in Spanish and English, are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

SUMMARY
Conducts inspections and investigations of business establishments to ensure compliance with municipal licensing tax regulations.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to:

- Ensuring compliance of all individuals, trades, professions, or businesses conducting activities within the City with local and state tax laws

- Processing and issuing relevant business licenses based on the nature of the business activities

- Maintaining organized business license documentation

- Addressing inquiries regarding business license requirements and assisting taxpayers with form completion as necessary

- Reviewing and auditing taxpayer records, financial statements, and reports to confirm accurate reporting and assessment

- Performing field investigations and inspections to ensure adherence to business license regulations

- Seizing commodities in violation of tax regulations

- Providing testimony in court as required

- Compiling daily and monthly reports

- Assisting with departmental projects as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not entail supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution in business, accounting, finance, or a related field; three to five years of relevant experience in tax compliance enforcement and effective customer service; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Proficient in reading, analyzing, and interpreting professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Capable of preparing reports, correspondence, and procedural manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from groups of managers, customers, and the general public.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and manage a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Capable of interpreting various instructions provided in written or oral form. Ability to enforce tax regulations impartially and objectively.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
