Position Overview: The Director of Geriatric Services is a vital member of the leadership team within the Section of Geriatrics, collaborating closely with the Practice Manager and Nurse Manager. This team is dedicated to steering the overall operations, management, and strategic direction of the Geriatrics Section, ensuring alignment with the educational, operational, and research missions of Dartmouth Health and the Geisel School of Medicine.

Leadership Responsibilities: As a leader, the Director exemplifies high-quality, compassionate clinical care and fosters an environment of effective teaching and respectful collaboration among interprofessional colleagues. The Director is appointed by the Department Chair and plays a crucial role in shaping the future of geriatrics care.

Strategic Goals: The Chief will spearhead the development of a comprehensive care plan for older adults across various settings, including inpatient, outpatient, long-term care, rehabilitation, and home care. Key objectives include enhancing outreach efforts and formulating a system-wide strategy that fulfills the tripartite mission of delivering exceptional clinical care, nurturing a rich educational atmosphere, and advancing innovative research aimed at improving the health of older adults and those with complex medical conditions.

Long-term Vision: A significant aspect of this role involves establishing an interdisciplinary geriatrics fellowship. Therefore, experience in managing graduate medical education programs across diverse disciplines is highly desirable. Candidates must possess board certification in geriatrics and current licensure (or eligibility for licensure) in New Hampshire and Vermont. The position encompasses a blend of clinical, administrative, and educational/research responsibilities, tailored to the candidate's expertise.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the interprofessional leadership team to establish goals and strategies that align with departmental objectives, emphasizing the importance of a shared mission.
  • Oversee the quality and improvement of patient care, education, research, and service within the Section.
  • Engage in operational oversight of clinical activities, ensuring high-quality care delivery and enriching educational experiences for students and trainees.
  • Involve faculty and staff in addressing operational challenges creatively.
  • Appoint Associate Chiefs and Program Leaders as necessary, in partnership with departmental leadership.
  • Participate in departmental leadership meetings and relevant professional development opportunities.

Fiscal and Operational Oversight:

  • Develop and monitor the annual operating budget, staffing plans, and capital needs for the Section, ensuring alignment with departmental and institutional goals.
  • Justify and initiate requests for new or replacement faculty and staff, adhering to established recruitment methodologies.
  • Manage sectional discretionary and academic enhancement funds in accordance with institutional guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with patient billing and coding practices.
  • Maintain a robust compliance program aligned with the Institutional Compliance Plan.
  • Develop equitable faculty compensation strategies consistent with institutional policies.

Personnel Management:

  • Create a staffing plan that meets clinical service demands while ensuring equitable assignment distribution among faculty and staff.
  • Review and update position descriptions to accurately reflect the needs and responsibilities within the Section.
  • Establish processes for time-off requests, ensuring adherence to institutional guidelines.
  • Participate in annual performance evaluations and monitor ongoing practice performance.
  • Ensure compliance with clinical privilege renewal and academic reappointment requirements.
  • Address quality of care concerns in collaboration with departmental leadership.

Faculty Mentorship:

  • Facilitate the onboarding and orientation of new faculty members.
  • Encourage regular meetings between faculty and leadership to set and monitor professional development goals.
  • Provide mentorship to faculty in identifying scholarly interests and advancing their academic careers.
  • Assist faculty in pursuing professional development opportunities and scholarly activities.
  • Support faculty in preparing promotion requests and developing necessary documentation.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced clinical degree (MD or DO).
  • Completion of a residency program.
  • Preferred completion of a Geriatric Fellowship.
  • Current licensure in NH and VT or willingness to obtain.
  • DEA registration.
  • Board Certification or eligibility in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or Geriatrics.
