Position Summary:

The Senior Staff Geologist will operate with a degree of autonomy, leading the synthesis of structural and geophysical data while employing advanced geo-statistical methodologies to evaluate reservoir characteristics and enhance models that illustrate exploration prospect petroleum system components.

This role includes managing an exploration opportunity database to prioritize leads and prospects.

Furthermore, the individual will perform comprehensive technical evaluations for emerging plays and work closely with asset teams to explore geological opportunities.

The position entails providing strategic insights, executing dynamic capital initiatives, and overseeing data collection and integration strategies to ultimately broaden Devon's asset portfolio.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Integrate well logs, core samples, seismic data, completion, and production information to identify a range of exploration opportunities.
  • Collaborate with a geoscience team and reservoir engineers to evaluate the economic viability of each exploration lead or prospect and assign rankings.
  • Lead the integration of structural data utilizing geo-statistical techniques to assess reservoir characteristics and develop geological models.
  • Engage in strategic evaluations, refine models, and work with interdisciplinary teams to enhance reservoir characterization.
  • Conduct technical evaluations to assess emerging unconventional and resource plays, providing valuable insights for exploration.
  • Work with asset teams to explore geological opportunities, conduct geological analyses, and apply stratigraphic and structural principles.
  • Provide strategic recommendations and oversee the planning and execution of capital programs related to data collection or acquisition (coring, sampling, testing, drilling, recompletions, seismic data, and processing) to optimize exploration efforts.
  • Create maps, cross-sections, and geological models to characterize and articulate the risks associated with a prospect's petroleum system components.
  • Offer guidance on data processing requirements, including log analysis, petrophysical model development, and oversight of core/cuttings preparation and analysis.
  • Participate in the execution of exploration wells by contributing geological insights to the well planning process, supporting operations, and potentially overseeing geological data acquisition projects such as logging or coring.
  • Utilize knowledge of the latest drilling and completion practices, technologies, and associated costs in prospect evaluation and ranking.
  • Work independently to perform exploration-related geoscience tasks while regularly collaborating with Geologists and Engineers in a team-oriented environment.
  • Exhibit effective multi-disciplinary teamwork and communication skills.

Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor's degree in Geology or a related field is required.
Master's degree in Geology or a related field is preferred.

Experience:
7+ years of experience in petroleum exploration is preferred.
Experience with Gulf Coast geology and exploration is desired.
