We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director & Counsel to join our Global Privacy & Data Law Group in the General Counsel's Organization. This is a hybrid role based in New York, reporting to the Chief Privacy Counsel.
Key Responsibilities- Advise on the enhancement of our global privacy and data management program.
- Coordinate with operational and compliance teams to assess privacy, data management, and AI legal issues arising in the context of our products and services.
- Work collaboratively with business unit lawyers to draft, negotiate, and resolve contractual issues arising in our agreements.
- Partner with Government Affairs to assess new U.S. privacy and AI legislation.
- Support privacy due diligence and integration for our M&A activities.
- JD (or equivalent) and licensed to practice law in the United States.
- 6+ years of relevant privacy experience in a law firm and/or in-house legal environment.
- Experience with privacy regulations such as the GDPR, CCPA, and GLBA with a strong understanding of the common requirements arising from these laws.
- Experience advising product teams on how to develop a programmatic approach to the nuanced legal and policy requirements arising in the privacy/data space.
- Experience engaging with policymakers and lobbyists on legislative tracking and consultations.
- CIPP/US and/or CIPP/EU (Certified Information Privacy Professional) accreditation.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey clear advice and provide pragmatic and business-oriented solutions.
- Strong executive presence and ability to influence stakeholders on cross-functional teams at all levels.
- Big picture thinker who is intellectually curious, with the ability to resolve novel, complex issues with a resourceful, can-do attitude.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and build excellent relationships with legal colleagues and business clients, while prioritizing multiple challenging tasks and managing stakeholder expectations.
- Willingness and flexibility to be a team player, and take on new responsibilities and challenges as American Express and its businesses continue to evolve.
