Job Overview:

The Alternatives Advisory Practice is a key component within Northern Trust Asset Management, closely collaborating with the Global Family Office practice to provide bespoke Private Investments and Hedge Fund solutions.

This dynamic team engages in investment and operational diligence with 50 South Capital, a boutique alternatives provider within Northern Trust managing over $14.1 billion in assets.

The team is seeking an experienced professional to join their Chicago headquarters and contribute to reviewing, analyzing, and sourcing investments across the alternatives space.

This role will involve monitoring legacy portfolios, structuring and implementing tailored alternatives portfolios for clients, as well as assisting in new business efforts and portfolio monitoring.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate potential private fund investment opportunities (buyout/growth, venture, credit, real assets) and hedge funds, including assessing track records, strategies, and teams, and making recommendations on whether clients should invest.
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with fund managers in the U.S. and Europe to position Northern Trust for investment, potentially involving travel within the US and certain European countries.
  • Conduct general research across private markets, identify trends, and develop investment theses.
  • Monitor existing fund portfolios and develop insights into fund performance.
  • Collaborate in client servicing efforts, portfolio implementation, and strategy development.
  • Assist with special projects as needed, such as writing industry white papers and compiling ad hoc reports.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate strong analytical and judgment skills to assess both quantitative and qualitative aspects of an investment.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work in a collegial, team-oriented environment, and represent the group before investors, other LPs, fund managers, placement agents, attorneys, and leverage providers.
  • Showcase strong communication skills, both oral and written, and high attention to detail and a strong work ethic.
  • Display knowledge about the private investments industry (as well as hedge funds), deal structures, and various participants in the private credit ecosystem.
  • Exhibit understanding of private fund investments (as well as hedge funds), portfolio construction, and fund leverage/cash management.
  • Show intellectual curiosity and a humble approach to investing.
  • Be highly proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Estimated Salary Range: $120,000 - $180,000 per annum, based on experience and qualifications.
