Position Summary
The Emergency Care Technician II is tasked with delivering direct patient care under the supervision of a physician in the Emergency Department. This role is pivotal in assisting nursing staff to ensure high-quality, compassionate care for patients, fostering a collaborative environment among patients, families, and the entire care team.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with and support RNs in patient care, which may include:
- Monitoring vital signs
- Initiating IVs and conducting blood draws
- Documenting patient information
- Communicating effectively with patients and their families
- Assisting in medical procedures
- Cleaning and dressing wounds
- Supporting airway management
- Initiating cardiac monitoring
- Performing emergency defibrillation as needed
- Conducting point-of-care testing
- Facilitating patient transport and discharge
- Conduct basic patient observation and report significant changes in condition to the appropriate team member.
- Maintain supplies and cleanliness in patient care areas.
- Execute clerical tasks to support departmental operations, including order entry and documentation in health records.
Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma preferred or equivalent.
- Completion of an EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic certification course is required.
Experience:
- Experience in emergency settings is preferred.
- Successful completion of ED orientation and training is required.
- Knowledge of age-specific principles of growth and development is essential.
Credentials:
- Current state EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic certification is required.
- Basic Life Support certification is mandatory upon hire, with Advanced Cardiac Life Support required within six months.
- Proficiency in IV skills and phlebotomy is essential.
- Strong communication skills and computer proficiency are required.
Working Conditions
- Ability to lift and handle patients weighing up to 35 lbs without assistive devices.
- Exposure to biohazards and medical environments is expected.
- Vision and hearing must be within normal limits to ensure effective communication.
