Medical Laboratory Specialist

Job Summary

Key Responsibilities
Technical Responsibilities:
- Ensures accurate and efficient pre-analytic workflow, including order entry, specimen collection, and processing.
- Verifies orders and resolves discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Ensures non-patient information is accurate and complete.
- Handles unresolved orders and troubleshoots as needed.
- Verifies specimens for add-on tests and generates add-on test orders.
- Recognizes and addresses fraud and abuse compliance issues.
- Collects, receives, and processes specimens, ensuring accurate labeling and documentation.
- Aliquots specimens according to established protocols.
- Recognizes and addresses fraud and abuse compliance issues.
- Performs analytical testing, including instrument maintenance and quality control.
Maintaining Test System Integrity:
- Performs preventative maintenance on instruments and equipment.
- Verifies reagents and supplies meet defined acceptability criteria.
- Ensures sufficient reagents and supplies are available for testing.
- Performs and records quality control as required.
- Evaluates QC results and takes corrective action as needed.
Specimen Preparation:
- Performs pretest specimen preparation according to protocols.
- Transfers or ships specimens to approved testing locations.
Performing Tests:
- Prioritizes testing based on assignment or established priorities.
- Recognizes the need for age-specific protocols and follows them.
- Responds effectively to changes in workflow and adjusts priorities as needed.
- Monitors daily workflow and adjusts staff assignments and priorities to meet service levels.
Technical Review and Interpretation:
- Reviews results for completeness, correctness, and consistency.
- Evaluates test results and provides accurate interpretations as needed.
- Recognizes unusual test results and completes reflex testing or follow-up actions as needed.
- Follows established notification protocols for critical values and phone/fax results requests.
Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving:
- Recognizes test system performance problems and takes corrective action.
- Escalates unresolved problems as needed.
- Prints pending logs and follows up to ensure pending tests are completed or cancelled.
Post-Test Specimen Storage:
- Stores specimens and related materials according to protocols.
- Retrieves specimens and related materials as needed.
Post-Analytic Workflow:
- Verifies and reports results according to procedure.
- Generates written reports according to established protocol.
- Reviews electronic or printed reports and recognizes problems.
- Amends reports according to procedure.
- Responds to inquiries according to established protocol.
- Stores documents and records according to established protocol.
- Performs billing and enters credits for tests and services as needed.
Universal Responsibilities:
- Ensures quality of operations by following written standard operating procedures.
- Operates instruments and equipment according to protocol.
- Uses computers according to established protocol.
- Completes proficiency and competency requirements of the department.
- Completes hospital or lab occurrence reports as required.
- Participates in the training of new employees and students.
- Performs operational review of new procedures.
- Participates in new test development, validations, and implementation.
- Maintains proper documentation in accordance with CAP regulatory requirements.
Ensuring Safety of Operations:
- Follows all required safety procedures.
- Uses personal protective equipment appropriate for tasks performed.
- Maintains a clean and organized work area.
Providing Service Excellence:
- Answers telephones using AIDET telephone etiquette.
- Maintains patient confidentiality, including protected health information.
- Assists patients and other contacts as needed.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or Allied Health qualifying the applicant to take the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification examination.
- General MLS or MT(ASCP) certification or eligible or Categorical BB, C, H, or M (ASCP) Certification or eligible.
