POSITION SUMMARY

The role involves working as a certified feeding assistant, providing essential support to the dietary and nursing teams in the overall delivery of meal services.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS:
  • This position is part of the dietary department.
  • Prior to engaging in feeding assistance for residents without complex needs, the dining support aide must have successfully completed a State-approved Paid Feeding Assistant Training program, which encompasses:
    • Feeding methodologies
    • Support with feeding and hydration
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
    • Appropriate responses to resident behaviors
    • Safety protocols and emergency procedures, including the Heimlich maneuver
    • Infection control measures
    • Understanding resident rights
    • Identifying changes in resident behavior that deviate from their norm and the importance of reporting these to the supervising nurse
  • Assists nursing staff in providing feeding support to residents who do not have complex feeding issues, such as swallowing difficulties or those requiring tube or parental/IV feedings. This assistance is conducted under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN) on duty. In emergencies, the dining assistant must promptly contact a supervisory nurse for assistance.
  • The interdisciplinary team determines the suitability of residents for the program based on their most recent assessments and care plans.
  • The position typically involves working one hour before and one hour after the full meal service.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Meal Service:
  • Facilitates the transportation of residents to and from the dining area for meal services.
  • Assists in preparing the dining room and completing pre-meal tasks related to table arrangements, beverages, and maintaining resident dignity.
  • Distributes trays and beverages to residents within the dining area.
  • Delivers meal trays to residents' rooms, including setting up the tray and food items.
  • Provides assistance and feeding support to residents without complex feeding challenges.
  1. Responds to call lights as necessary before or after meals, allowing nursing staff to concentrate on residents' activities of daily living (ADL) and medication requirements.
  2. Supports hydration efforts by providing ice and water to residents between meals, including managing the hydration cart and nighttime snack distribution.
