POSITION DESCRIPTION

The University of California Santa Barbara is seeking applications for a tenure-track faculty role at the Assistant Professor level. This position is part of a collaborative initiative aimed at fostering interdisciplinary research and graduate training in Quantitative Biosciences, focusing on experimental, computational, and theoretical methodologies to explore living systems across various scales.

Research Areas of Interest:

  • Biophysical mechanisms of emergent properties in living systems.
  • Chemical methodologies (e.g., proteomics, spectroscopy) for understanding biological phenomena.
  • Organizational principles of cellular and subcellular dynamics.
  • Quantitative analyses of developmental processes and tissue mechanics.
  • Metabolic pathways and energy dynamics in biological systems.
  • Neural computation related to sensory processing and behavior.

We are particularly interested in candidates who utilize modern tools from various disciplines to investigate biological organization and functionality. While theoretical researchers may be considered, a proven track record of effective collaboration with experimentalists is essential.

The successful candidate will hold a faculty appointment that spans the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomolecular Science and Engineering and relevant academic departments, including but not limited to Chemistry & Biochemistry, Ecology, Evolution & Marine Biology, Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology, and Physics. Preference will be given to individuals with diverse scientific interests, a strong record of research innovation, and a commitment to teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a high-quality, funded research program.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Recruit, supervise, and mentor graduate students.
  • Engage in university service and professional activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic Qualifications: Applicants must have completed all requirements for a PhD (or equivalent) except the dissertation at the time of application in relevant fields such as physics, biology, or chemistry.

Additional Qualifications: Successful candidates must have completed their PhD by the appointment start date.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with broad scientific interests that encompass both life and physical sciences, a demonstrated record of research excellence, and the ability to teach a variety of courses relevant to the Biomolecular Science and Engineering Program.
