Job Summary
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is seeking a skilled Machinist to join our team. As a Machinist, you will be responsible for performing skilled manual work in connection with the operation of precision machine tools used in fabricating metal parts.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate precision machine tools, including lathes, planers, milling machines, shapers, drill presses, grinders, and other standard metal working machines.
- Set up, adjust, and operate precision machine tools to fabricate metal parts, install, repair, and maintain mechanical equipment.
- Weld, press, cut, form, shape, lap, bore, turn, bend, finish, fit, and perform other bench, machine, or hand tool operations required in the fabrication, installation, and repair of metal parts.
- Install, tear down, inspect, repair, replace parts, reassemble, adjust, and maintain all classes of machinery and machine parts.
- Conduct work in a safe manner and in accordance with established safety rules and practices.
Additional Responsibilities
- Rig heavy parts and machinery for removal and installation using cables, slings, ropes, and chains, or other means.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair gasoline and diesel engines, and perform other repairs on trucks, automobiles, and heavy mobile equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors. May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.
Requirements
- Considerable knowledge of the machining and welding properties of metals.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, tools, and equipment of the machinist trade.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
- Skill in the use and care of the tools, machines, and equipment of the machinist trade.
- Ability to work from sketches and broken parts.
- Ability to do oxyacetylene and electric arc welding.
Education and Experience
Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and completion of an approved apprentice training program in machining, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Substitution
Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
