Nursing Assistant Job Description

At Welia Health, we are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Nursing Assistant to join our team. As a Nursing Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and supporting our nursing staff in delivering exceptional patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist professional nursing staff in providing routine care and treatment to patients, including vital sign measurements, specimen collection, and patient transfers.
  • Work closely with nursing staff, medical staff, patients, and their families to ensure seamless care coordination and communication.
  • Perform routine treatment procedures as directed, including setting up patient care equipment and assisting with ADLs.
  • Assist with preoperative and postoperative care, including positioning patients, lifting and turning patients with proper body mechanics, and ambulating patients as directed.
  • Take and record vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and O2 saturation, and collect specimens as requested.
  • Communicate effectively with team leaders regarding patient status, including updates on vital signs, activity, and appetite, and accurately document activities performed on patient charts.
  • Prepare patients for meals, distribute food trays, and assist or feed patients as necessary, and remove trays.
  • Make rounds to assigned patients, anticipate patients' needs, and answer/respond to patient call lights or paging.
  • Handle and care for patient's clothing and other personal property, including prosthetic devices, hearing aids, dentures, glasses, contact lenses, etc., from admission through discharge of the patient.
  • Transport patients to and from various areas as necessary.
  • Stock nurse servers daily with established lists of supplies needed to help the care team provide care to patients.
  • Assist in checking expiration dates on supplies monthly, as directed and per process defined by unit.
  • Assist in maintaining safety by reporting any medications not located in the medication bin in the nurse servers to the charge nurse and refraining from performing any other tasks involved with medications.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and clean environment by reporting equipment that is out of order, reporting other problems to management, cleaning equipment as assigned, and preparing same for disinfection, and receiving supply stock on the unit.
  • Attend departmental meetings and in-service education programs and meetings, as assigned, to learn new treatments, procedures, developmental skills, communication, etc., and participate in and support committees and other activities which promote the growth and development of nursing and/or patient care.
  • Know and understand role in disaster plan, fire plan, Code Blue and Code Pink.
  • Establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and other organization personnel, while assuring confidentiality of patient information, and support the Patient Bill of Rights and all organization policies.
  • Support the policies and procedures of the organization and the standards of the Joint Commission as required for full accreditation.
  • Consider age-related factors in care, treatment, education, and evaluation of patients ranging from neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics, and apply knowledge of age-related factors appropriately in accordance with professional standards and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate compliance in following Standard Precautions for all aspects of patient care and demonstrate organization values in daily work.
  • Implement quality assurance standards and programs to assure compliance with standards of Joint Commission, as required for full accreditation.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); completion of nursing assistant program at accredited school; previous experience preferable, but not essential.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to write simple correspondence; ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to patients, families, or co-workers.
  • Ability to add and subtract three-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's; ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certification as a Nursing Assistant is preferred but not required. BLS certification is required every 2 years.
