Key Responsibilities
Deliver Comprehensive Pharmaceutical Care to Emergency Department Patients
- Engage in daily patient care activities.
- Communicate medication order clarifications with prescribers.
- Document changes in patient records and notify relevant parties of medication order modifications.
- Monitor drug therapy for appropriateness regarding dosage, regimen, and potential interactions.
- Provide pharmacokinetic consultations and dosing recommendations as necessary.
- Identify, document, and report adverse drug reactions and medication errors.
- Participate in the management of medical emergencies.
- Encourage formulary adherence by converting non-formulary orders when feasible.
- Maintain updated patient profiles, including demographics and current medications.
- Facilitate medication reconciliation for patient admissions and discharges.
- Optimize pharmacotherapy regimens based on current evidence-based practices.
- Stay informed on hospital pharmacy knowledge and maintain professional expertise.
Provide Operational Support in the Emergency Department and Central Pharmacy
- Review medication orders for accuracy.
- Perform order entry for designated areas.
- Resolve drug distribution and related issues.
Promote Rational and Cost-Effective Drug Therapy
- Identify opportunities for positive pharmacoeconomic impacts and develop medication use evaluations.
- Document clinical consultations and cost avoidance initiatives.
- Monitor the use of high-cost medications to ensure compliance with approved criteria.
- Anticipate changes in drug therapy and assess their potential budgetary impacts.
- Coordinate pharmaceutical care for ongoing research in the emergency department.
- Provide educational sessions for nursing and medical staff.
- Engage in research aimed at enhancing emergency medicine practices.
- Contribute to teaching programs related to emergency medicine.
- Facilitate professional development for pharmacists in emergency medicine.
- Deliver presentations and publications on emergency medicine topics.
- Participate in hospital committees and emergency medicine team meetings.

Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited pharmacy school with a Bachelor of Science or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.
- A minimum of two years of relevant hospital pharmacy experience or completion of an ASHP accredited PGY1 residency.
- Current license to practice pharmacy in the State of Iowa.
- ACLS certification or completion within three months of hire.
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Familiarity with standard pharmacy equipment.
