Pathology Specimen Processing Specialist

Position Overview:
This role involves the reception and management of tissue and cytology samples, alongside providing essential support functions. Responsibilities include assisting with frozen sections, bone marrow procedures, and fine needle aspirations, while also offering clerical support and maintaining laboratory equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive, accession, and label specimens along with their corresponding documentation, ensuring accurate identification and specimen integrity. Document any issues following established protocols. Execute necessary computer and clerical tasks for all surgical and cytology specimens as required. Aid pathologists or pathologist assistants with preparatory tasks, including the printing of cassettes. Prepare containers and cassettes for shipment to the designated processing site, ensuring they are placed in appropriate transport coolers with the necessary paperwork and routing slips.
- Assist with frozen sections by operating a cryostat, adhering to correct settings, temperatures, alignments, and knife angles to ensure optimal sectioning. Accession, process, cut, and stain fresh samples for frozen section diagnosis. Communicate with relevant physicians to relay results from the pathologist. Accurately stamp and record all specimens for the Turn Around Time documentation process. Transfer tissue to the corresponding cassette and place it in formalin for permanent processing.
- Support autopsy procedures by ensuring all necessary supplies are available in the morgue. Review documentation to confirm completeness prior to the autopsy. Accession autopsy cases and prepare cassettes and containers accordingly.
- Assist with various procedures as directed, such as fine needle aspirations and bone marrows, adhering to site protocols and utilizing the required skills for accessioning, labeling, and preparation for transport.
- Provide clerical support, including triaging phone calls to the appropriate pathologist or staff member. Effectively troubleshoot and document any issues related to specimens and surgical pathology procedures.
- Maintain all laboratory equipment, staining protocols, slide and block filing systems, retained tissue specimens, and other materials removed during surgical procedures. Complete maintenance logs on a routine basis as directed.
Qualifications:
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required. A minimum of 6 months of prior medical laboratory experience in specimen handling is preferred. Strong communication, comprehension, and typing skills are essential. A solid understanding of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the pathology field is necessary. Demonstrated increasing responsibility in personnel interaction and organizational skills is required.
Soft skills should include effective oral and written communication, analytical and strategic thinking, and proficiency in necessary computer programs such as Word and Excel. The ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously is essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
Additional related education and/or experience is preferred. An Associate's degree is a plus.
