The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is dedicated to advancing the transition towards a sustainable, efficient, and secure energy landscape through both foundational and applied research.

The Buildings Systems Group at PNNL engages in applied research aimed at improving energy and water efficiency, enhancing occupant productivity, and ensuring the resilient operation of buildings alongside their interconnected energy and water systems.

Key Responsibilities:
We are in search of a seasoned engineer or scientist specializing in water resilience to lead research initiatives and provide technical expertise in campus and building water management. This includes:

  • Evaluating system performance
  • Testing and demonstrating innovative technologies
  • Developing analytical tools
  • Contributing to policy formulation
  • Delivering training for both federal and commercial facilities

The ideal candidate will apply their technical knowledge and scientific principles to:

  • Create novel assessment methodologies for water systems
  • Analyze performance metrics for water efficiency and resilience
  • Conduct tests and demonstrations of new technologies
  • Assist in the development of federal policies to meet emerging requirements
  • Provide technical support to federal agencies regarding water management and resilience

Accountability:
The successful candidate will report to Project and Task Managers, ensuring adherence to project protocols and timely completion of assigned tasks within budget constraints. Additionally, they will collaborate with the Building Systems Group Leader and Building Performance Evaluation Team Leader for staff development and performance assessments.

Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications include a BS/BA with 7+ years of relevant experience, or an MS/MA with 5+ years, or a PhD with 3+ years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
A graduate degree in civil or environmental engineering, building sciences, water resources, environmental science, or a related discipline is preferred. Experience in federal water management and a comprehensive understanding of federal water regulations is highly desirable. Practical experience in evaluating water systems at the building or campus level, including design, commissioning, operations, and maintenance, is essential.

Knowledge of water systems and infrastructure, along with experience in experimental research and technology demonstrations, will be advantageous. A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams are crucial. Strong written communication skills and a commitment to learning and innovation in energy and water efficiency are also important.
