The Detroit Public Schools Community District is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Naval Science Instructor to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who are passionate about teaching and mentoring students in a unique and challenging environment.

About the Role

As a Senior Naval Science Instructor, you will be responsible for teaching the prescribed 3- or 4-year Naval Science curriculum to students in grades 9-12. You will also instruct in military drill, counsel students in the NJROTC program, and write/update lesson plans for the NJROTC curriculum and other lesson preparation requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Teach the prescribed 3- or 4-year Naval Science curriculum to students in grades 9-12
  • Instruct in military drill
  • Counsel students in the NJROTC program
  • Write/update lesson plans for the NJROTC curriculum and other lesson preparation requirements
  • Mentor cadets and assist with higher education or employment opportunities and goals
  • Requisition all government furnished equipment (includes uniforms, training aids, books, drill rifles, air rifles, and organizational equipment)
  • Arrange for cleaning and tailoring of uniforms
  • Survey old and worn uniforms and other government property
  • Perform simple preventive maintenance of training aids and devices
  • Inventory control of all government furnished equipment/materials (including annual wall-to-wall inventory)
  • Ensure proper physical security of all government furnished equipment/materials
  • Plan extracurricular activities for the NJROTC unit (including color/honor guard ceremonies, drill team and rifle teams competitive meets, field trips, basic leadership training, ship cruises, etc.)
  • Prepare periodic reports on program administration and logistics
  • Keep current and abreast of new developments and organizations within the Navy
  • Assess unit progress to assure NJROTC program objectives are met
Requirements
  • Currently serving Commissioned Officers in the Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard Reserve with 10 years of honorable service in the grades of 0-3 through O-6; and Commissioned Officers separated/retired within the past 5 years with a minimum of 10 years cumulative honorable service in the grades of 0-3 through O-6 are eligible to apply
  • Must possess a bachelor's degree
  • Meet the minimum qualifications required by the Department of Defense
