Job Summary
The role of a Special Education Teacher involves designing and implementing educational experiences for young learners with disabilities, encompassing cognitive, emotional, or physical challenges, across various educational environments. The educator will develop a dynamic curriculum and learning atmosphere that delivers tailored instruction; foster strong connections with students; adapt general education materials to accommodate individual needs with additional resources, modifications, and necessary support; and cultivate positive relationships with families and colleagues.

Essential Job Functions
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
  1. Articulating their educational philosophy and demonstrating its application in practice.
  2. Establishing and upholding behavioral standards to create an effective learning environment.
  3. Delivering instruction that respects the diverse individual and cultural backgrounds of students.
  4. Designing lesson plans and instructional materials that cater to the unique needs of each student.
  5. Facilitating and assessing student learning, including evaluating academic and social progress.
  6. Creating an engaging classroom atmosphere that encourages active participation from all students.
  7. Collaborating with parents, families, and the community to support student success.

Job Requirements
Candidates must possess:
  1. A valid teaching certificate in Alaska with a specialization in Special Education.
  2. A minimum of six semester credit hours in early childhood education.
  3. Evidence of subject matter expertise demonstrated through relevant qualifications or assessments.
Preferred qualifications include:
  1. Experience working with students in special education.
  2. Collaboration experience in supporting Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) in a public school context.

Physical/Mental Demands
This position requires the ability to engage in frequent standing, walking, sitting, and communication. Candidates should be capable of managing stress effectively while interacting with a diverse range of individuals in a dynamic educational setting.

Work Environment
The work setting is professional, involving interaction with a variety of individuals with differing roles and abilities. The educator may encounter moderate noise levels and will be expected to adapt to various environmental conditions.
