Responsibilities

As a vital member of the Retail Banking Team, the Mortgage Consultant is responsible for originating mortgage loans to achieve individual and departmental production targets.

Loans must be originated in compliance with bank policies and regulatory guidelines, with a strong focus on providing outstanding customer service.

The Mortgage Consultant will:
  • Establish and nurture professional relationships with local business sources through a proactive sales call program targeting realtors and other referral partners.
  • Solicit high-quality loans that align with current product offerings.
  • Educate customers about the bank's loan programs, underwriting standards, and relevant government regulations.
  • Schedule customer appointments at convenient locations, coordinating with associates as necessary.
  • Conduct thorough interviews with applicants to gather and analyze essential information regarding income, assets, debts, and credit history.
  • Advise potential borrowers on the most suitable products based on their financial situations, highlighting the features and benefits of various loan programs.
  • Complete loan applications and pre-processing tasks promptly to ensure timely disclosures.
  • Gather and submit necessary documentation for loan decisions by bank underwriters.
  • Cross-sell additional bank products and services, referring customers to appropriate departments.
  • Communicate loan approvals, denials, and counter-offers to applicants while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Develop new business by marketing to satisfied former customers and potential referral sources.
  • Represent the bank at local business and community events to foster relationships and promote services.
  • Stay informed about market trends and regulatory changes in the mortgage industry.
  • Participate in ongoing training and community outreach programs to support low to moderate-income groups.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal and state regulations, maintaining a thorough understanding of lending programs and policies.
  • Manage the loan file throughout the processing, underwriting, closing, and post-closing stages.
  • Respond to inquiries related to mortgage lending and assist other bank personnel as needed.
  • Complete annual training requirements on federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:
  • An Associate's degree or equivalent preferred.
  • Specialized education and training in banking and lending.
  • Sales training experience.
  • Strong reading, writing, grammar, and mathematical skills.
  • Proficiency in PC applications and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A solid understanding of bank operating policies affecting consumer services.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the bank's mortgage and home equity products.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in real estate lending, including 2 years in a sales-related role.
  • National Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) registration as required by The SAFE Act.
