Position Description:

Summary of Role:

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is tasked with conducting thorough evaluations, formulating care strategies, and executing and assessing patient care. The RN is responsible for administering prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with established clinical nursing standards. Additionally, the RN supervises, assesses, and evaluates the care provided by non-licensed staff. The RN plays a pivotal role in leading the multidisciplinary care team for patients experiencing primarily acute or critical health conditions. Furthermore, the RN engages in various technical services to meet the comprehensive needs of patients. Under the guidance of the Laboratory, the RN also oversees patient specimen analysis, quality assurance, and equipment upkeep.

Intensive Care Unit Details:
The ICU, situated on the second floor, comprises nine monitored beds designated for patients in critical condition who require a higher nurse-to-patient ratio. This includes patients on mechanical ventilation, those needing invasive monitoring, post-resuscitation cases requiring frequent vital sign checks, trauma patients needing close observation, and medical or surgical patients requiring intensive monitoring, as well as those undergoing acute hemodialysis. The RN will work 12-hour shifts on a rotating schedule that includes weekends.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts initial assessments and ongoing evaluations based on patient progress and unit protocols.
  • Records findings and shares relevant information with the interdisciplinary team as necessary.
  • Collaborates with team members to develop, assess, and adjust care plans to align with patient needs and objectives.
  • Delivers competent direct care while ensuring a safe and supportive environment, leading to high patient satisfaction.
  • Guides team members in understanding hospital policies and procedures.
  • Educates patients and their families, considering specific patient demographics and readiness to learn.
  • Upholds patient confidentiality and adheres to standard precautions.
  • Administers medications and performs treatments as per physician orders and hospital protocols.
  • Keeps accurate documentation of all patient interactions and care provided.
  • Facilitates the transition of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in using necessary patient care equipment.
  • Coordinates the interdisciplinary team's response to emergency situations.
  • Performs Point-of-Care procedures promptly, adhering to established policies and quality control standards.
  • Develops individualized care plans and revises them based on patient responses to treatment, regularly evaluating their effectiveness.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively with the Resource Nurse, Chief Clinical Officer, and Physicians.
  • Exhibits knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identifying dysrhythmias and responding appropriately based on orders and ACLS protocols.
  • Conducts comprehensive assessments on all patients as per policy.
  • Monitors patients' hemodynamic status and accurately interprets results.
  • Consults with other departments as needed to provide a holistic approach to patient care.
  • Coordinates and oversees patient care as required.
  • This role is classified as safety-sensitive due to the critical nature of medical care provided to patients. Attention to detail is essential to prevent potential health risks or safety issues.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Licensure/Certification: Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse or licensure from a Nursing Compact state is required. BLS certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment and prior to delivering direct patient care. Successful completion of ACLS certification is mandatory for all Registered Nurses by the end of clinical orientation. Certifications must be renewed by the recommended renewal date indicated on the certification documentation.
