Role and Significance:
The Preschool Teacher acts as the primary educator in the classroom, responsible for planning and executing educational activities for preschool-aged children or infants/toddlers in the Head Start/Early Head Start Program, ensuring compliance with federal performance standards. Engages in quality assurance initiatives for HS/EHS.
Key Responsibilities:
- Designs, develops, and implements daily lesson plans that provide educational and enrichment activities for preschool-aged children or infants and toddlers, adhering to federal performance standards.
- Organizes classrooms into distinct learning areas that foster an effective educational environment.
- Evaluates and assesses children to identify developmental and educational needs, creating and implementing individualized education plans that meet federal standards.
- Supervises meal and snack times, classroom activities, and outdoor play to maintain a safe environment for young children.
- Monitors food service and inventory to ensure adequate supplies.
- Records children's progress and completes all necessary documentation in accordance with federal requirements.
- Initiates referrals for children to the Center Director through formal documentation.
- Plans and coordinates classroom activities for parent and community volunteers.
- Participates in workshops and meetings to gather and share information.
- Communicates with parents through conferences, written updates, and phone calls regarding their child's progress and classroom activities.
- Conducts health checks on children for any health concerns and reports findings to the Health Coordinator.
- Ensures that lessons and activities align with Florida Pre-Kindergarten standards.
- Conducts Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten assessments as required.
- Aims for at least 80% of children to be prepared for kindergarten.
- Facilitates quality interactions with children to achieve high CLASS scores.
- Employs active supervision techniques and maintains positive behavior in the classroom.
- Receives satisfactory evaluations on the Teacher Success Rubric.
- Maintains a comprehensive portfolio for each child, including observations and developmental assessments.
- Utilizes home visits and conferences to discuss individual child development and progress with parents.
- Reports any suspected child abuse or neglect to the appropriate authorities.
- Plans and oversees field trips for assigned children.
- Orders supplies and equipment for special needs children in the classroom.
- Assists in the transportation of special needs children as necessary.
- Inspects classrooms and outdoor areas to ensure safety and cleanliness.
- Reviews and submits accident and incident reports.
- Collaborates with other Head Start/Early Head Start staff regarding child and family concerns.
- Administers First Aid and CPR as needed.
- Performs additional related duties as required.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift at least 45 pounds and provide physical assistance in the transportation of special needs children. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals with disabilities.
Educational Qualifications:
- A bachelor's or advanced degree in Early Childhood Education; or a bachelor's or advanced degree in any field with coursework equivalent to a major in Early Childhood Education, along with experience teaching preschool-aged children.
- Teaching credentials: licensure or certification recognized by the local school district or state education agency for Pre-K teachers, with at least 500 hours of experience in an early childhood setting.
- Coursework: At least 18 semester credits in subjects focused on child development, early childhood education, and related fields.
- Completion of State of Florida Child Care Facility Training, including a Certificate of Completion for Developmentally Appropriate Practices for Preschoolers and the 45 hours of Florida Child Care Facility Training within 12 months of hire.
A minimum of two years of experience teaching in Head Start, Early Head Start, preschool, or kindergarten settings.
Bilingual candidates preferred: English/Spanish or other languages prevalent in the local community.
Additional requirements include certification in First Aid and CPR within 90 days of hire, and successful completion of a Level II background screening, local criminal record check, and drug screening prior to employment.
