The Clinical Pharmacist is tasked with interpreting medical prescriptions, overseeing potential medication interactions and allergies, compounding medications and intravenous solutions, and dispensing them in accordance with professional standards. Conducts regular inspections of medication areas. Engages with healthcare providers regarding medication management and fosters efficient workflow while serving as a reliable source of information and support for hospital staff and physicians in medication therapy. Oversees the work of pharmacy technicians to ensure precision, productivity, and technician proficiency.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Dispenses and supervises the preparation of prescriptions.
  • Ensures the accurate profiling, preparation, and dispensing of new medication orders for inpatients across various facilities as required, adhering to established procedures and efficiency criteria.
  • Utilizes sound judgment in decision-making, recognizing personal limitations and seeking assistance when necessary, particularly in urgent situations.
  • Prepares and oversees the formulation of parenteral admixtures, nutritional solutions, anti-cancer medications, and other sterile products as needed.
  • Directs pharmacy technicians, interns, and volunteers involved in medication management and sterile preparations, ensuring their work aligns with departmental protocols, professional standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Addresses inquiries and concerns from individuals regarding medications.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with colleagues.
  • Acts as a resource for drug-related information and conducts educational sessions on medications.
  • Engages in relevant clinical activities as defined by the department.
  • Participates in departmental meetings and committees.
  • Completes and maintains competencies related to IV/Admixtures Lab and departmental standards.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to sit for extended periods, stand for long durations, and walk as needed throughout the day. Frequent manual dexterity, including handling, grasping, and reaching. Occasional lifting of light to moderate weights and pushing heavier items. Capable of hearing normal conversations and possessing adequate vision for various tasks.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must possess a B.S. in Pharmacy or Pharm.D. (5 or 6 years depending on the state of graduation).

Must be registered in the relevant state or have completed board examinations with pending licensure accepted.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Experience may range from recent graduates to those with prior training in hospital pharmacy, including familiarity with computer systems as a baseline requirement. Previous experience in a hospital pharmacy setting is preferred.
