This role supports the mission of the Y, a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Aquatic Safety Coordinator at an Akron Area YMCA fosters and upholds a secure, supportive, and positive environment that welcomes and respects all individuals while ensuring and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas in alignment with YMCA policies and procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Maintains vigilant supervision of the aquatic area at all times, free from distractions from electronic devices and prolonged conversations.
  2. Understands and reviews all emergency protocols and responds to emergencies promptly in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and completes necessary reports as required. Participates in regular in-service training to maintain knowledge and practice all emergency procedures and skills.
  3. Addresses challenges with potential solutions in a timely manner.
  4. Knows, comprehends, and consistently applies safety regulations, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  5. Remains composed and objective under pressure or when faced with challenges from others.
  6. Reports to work punctually and is rescue-ready at the beginning of the scheduled shift.
  7. Secures a qualified substitute well in advance and informs the Supervisor.
  8. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department regulations.
  9. Conducts equipment checks and ensures necessary equipment is available as needed.
  10. Inspects the pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival.
  11. Performs chemical testing when not actively guarding, as required, and takes appropriate actions.
  12. Completes all other tasks as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimum age of 15.
  • Certifications: Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration.
  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard certification or equivalent.
  • Child abuse prevention training within 90 days of hire date.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
