Position Overview

APT Research is seeking a Software Safety Engineer to join our team in a hybrid work environment. This role primarily involves remote work with occasional in-office collaboration.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct software safety analysis, testing, and assess potential safety risks.
  • Create and/or revise Software System Safety Program Plans, Software Safety Assessment Reports, Hazard Analyses, and System Safety Risk Assessments.
  • Ensure bidirectional traceability from Software Requirements Specifications (SRS) through testing phases.
  • Perform peer evaluations of software safety documentation and analyses, including Safety Assessment Reports (SAR) and Hazard Tracking Systems.
  • Examine software and system testing documentation (STP, STD, STR) for compliance with software system safety requirements and evaluate test data to confirm system safety standards.
  • Conduct technical Software System Safety Reviews and prepare necessary documentation for Government approval.
Required Qualifications:
  • A minimum of a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering or Computer Science from an ABET accredited program, along with at least 6 years of relevant experience. An advanced degree is advantageous.
  • Capability to qualify as a Range Safety Officer/Laser Range Safety Officer through EAMS online courses.
  • Experience in a Department of Defense (DOD) setting, with the ability to work collaboratively and independently in an Integrated Product Team (IPT) environment.
  • Moderate to extensive experience in software safety, with familiarity in MIL-STD-882E, Level of Rigor, and safety documentation.
  • Knowledge of MIL-STD-882E, DA Pam 385-16, and JSSSEH is preferred.
Security Clearance:
  • Must possess a current Secret level Clearance.
Preferred Experience:
  • Background with Bradley Fighting Vehicle or similar tracked vehicles.
  • Experience with GVSC and/or AVMC is a plus.
  • Familiarity with safety or mission-critical systems in aviation, aerospace, defense, or related fields.

Work Environment:
  • This position is primarily remote, requiring participation in daily IPT meetings. Occasional travel may be necessary for testing events.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential for effective interaction with U.S. Government oversight and project management.
  • Professional interaction with colleagues, management, and personnel across various organizations is required.
Travel Requirements:
  • Domestic travel (within the U.S.) is expected to be less than 15%.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand and move outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Capability to lift over 35 lbs as needed.
  • Mobility within and around vehicles, including bending, crouching, and squatting.
Additional Functions:
  • Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision, make sound decisions, and demonstrate good judgment.
  • Appropriate work attire is required, ensuring no safety risks to oneself or others.
